Origins of the settlement
Traces of human presence in Hallstatt date back to 12,000 BC, with a pierced cave bear bone as the oldest artifact. The actual settlement began in the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC.

The region is famous for its salt production, which dates back to around 2000 BC. With the beginning of salt mining around 1500 BC, Hallstatt became home to the oldest salt mine in the world.

The Celts arrived in the region around 400 BC and a devastating landslide destroyed the Salzberg valley. The Romans later took control and continued salt mining.
