Early beginnings
The human presence in the area around Hallstatt can be traced back to 12,000 BC, with an artificially pierced cave bear bone as the oldest evidence. The first settlement began in the Neolithic period around 5000 BC.

Hallstatt is known for its salt production, which began around 2000 BC. Salt mining began around 1500 BC and Hallstatt is home to the oldest salt mine in the world.
2000 - 1500 BCCeltic and Roman times:
The Celts arrived in the area around 400 BC and a catastrophic landslide devastated the Salzberg valley. The Romans later took over the area and salt mining continued in Roman times.

A small Romanesque church was mentioned in Hallstatt in the 12th century. In 1284, Duke Albrecht of Austria erected a defense tower to protect the Salzberghoch valley.
